Reading is about both the literacy objectives and the content objectives. By providing rich and meaningful topics for students to read, students are more likely to grow because they are both engaged and challenged. Topics that are considered from a variety of cultural lenses encourage students to see their unique background as relevant to the conversation. Additionally, linguistic scaffolds give the students equitable entry points into the content, and that allows access to rigor.
